Dell Launches SightSpeed-Powered Video Conferencing on PCs

SightSpeed Business customers can now talk to up to 9 people simultaneously on a video call with prices starting at $19.95 a month per user. My experience with SightSpeed's 4-way video calling was pretty good. "I spent part of the weekend trying out the new SightSpeed build that I mentioned Friday. WOW. There is so much more to this – it seemed like the more I looked, the more I found and the better it got. My favorite part of this (SightSpeed) release, though, is all of the little things that have been changed and improved. I'm a very detail-oriented person, and I tend to notice things that a lot of other people don't, or that they see and just shrug off. The fact that SightSpeed has noticed these things, and taken the time and effort to fix or improve them, indicates to me that their developers are paying attention, they care about their product down to the smallest details, and they are really trying to make it the best that they can for their users. VoIP Provides the Next Level of Service
"Working with SightSpeed, an Internet-based video communications company, Xpress was able to set up a web-based videoconferencing system that the company's clients could also use. But the real benefit was providing clients with a realtime look of their product as it was coming off the press. All the clients have to do is dial in from their own computers… "SightSpeed has helped us facilitate that immensely because it’s just a couple of mouse clicks and you are connected as opposed to something like we are doing here like a webex where you have to dial in, set up the conference and get everybody to accept, it's just too time consuming because that’s the old way of doing things. We think things like SightSpeed represent new technology and affordability that we haven’t seen in the past,” says Joe Barnhill, president of Xpress.

Barnhill says the addition of the SightSpeed system has changed their relationships with their clients. "In terms of speed and personalization, it's a much more cordial relationship that we have with people," he says. "You can see them face to face as opposed to just an email or a voice mail. You get to know people, and you get to know them more personally because you are having more of an interaction. So I would say that it has helped us in our overall business model because of the way we interact with people. It's more like a family relationship dealing with our customers as opposed to doing it the old fashioned way."

    Vlip offers interactive video feature
"Vlip's strength is its simplicity. No other site offers this. YouTube offers a way to reply to videos, but not a button to have an immediate live video chat with someone. The company is particularly well placed, now that many PCs and other devices are being released with webcams built in."

    Seeing is healing
"Berkeley's SightSpeed Inc., is offering free video calling to wounded servicemen and women staying at the Mologne House on the campus of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Because many of those injured in Iraq are amputees, recovery time can be close to eight months. Twelve cameras have been set up at the Mologne House, and two families, chosen by The Wounded Warrior project, a nonprofit organization assisting severely injured servicemen and women, will have the service installed at their homes. SightSpeed's video mail also allows soldiers and families to send greetings to those still stationed in Iraq. "We see this as a way to give back to those who give so much," says Brad Treat, CEO of SightSpeed."

SightSpeed in March 7th 2005 issue of DER SPIEGEL

Now you see it, now you don't
"There has never been anything quite like information technology before, but there have certainly been other complex technologies that needed simplifying. Joe Corn, a history professor at Stanford University, believes that the first example of a complex consumer technology was clocks, which arrived in the 1820s. Clocks were sold with user manuals, which featured entries such as 'How to erect and regulate your device'. When sewing machines appeared in the 1840s, they came with 40-page manuals full of detailed instructions. Discouragingly, it took two generations until a trade publication was able to declare in the 1880s that 'every woman now knows how to use one.'"

    Hearing voices
"Sara Baumholtz lives in Hawaii and wants to stay in close touch with her young granddaughter in Pennsylvania. So Ms Baumholtz, by inclination an 'analogue', became a "digital immigrant". With the help of software from SightSpeed, a Californian firm that is at last making video-calling foolproof for ordinary humans, Ms Baumholtz now talks to, and makes faces at, the distant toddler through her PC monitor and webcam. And, because she is not using a telephone line and her broadband internet access is always on, she no longer bothers to 'hang up', staying connected to Pennsylvania throughout the day. That got her thinking. 'I wouldn't be surprised if I got rid of the phone,' she says."
